I started as an apprentice Instrument Artificer ('Tiffy') in 1983 and never really stopped. Forty years on, I've kept the control and safety systems running across Britain's heaviest industry — oil refineries, steelworks, gas terminals, fuel pipelines, chemical and power plants, and five years offshore on the rigs early on.
On High Hazard Refineries, Petrochemical Plants and Offshore Oil Rigs, a figure that doesn't add up isn't a typo — it's a safety case. That's the discipline I was trained in, and it's the eye I bring to everything recommended here.
These days that same discipline gets pointed at gentler things: wine labels that overclaim, juicers that underdeliver, and marmalade worth writing home about. I read the datasheet before I recommend anything — and if it isn’t good enough for my own kitchen, it isn’t on this site.
